If you are new to Austin, or not sure what cool things to do outside of CrossFit while you’re here, allow us to be your guide.

First things first, a GREAT resource to check out is:

Here you will find all the city’s daily happenings—from music and film, to community listings, poetry slams, coffee houses, cool restaurants and more.

And some of our favorite ‘local spots’ we love to tell our CrossFit brothers and sisters about, include:

Town Lake (a.k.a. “Lady Bird Lake”). A hiking, walking and biking trail in the heart of the city where everyone and their dog (literally) goes to get their sweat on, or simply to enjoy a pretty day. Also, while you’re at it, check out Zilker Park where all the festivities such as sand volleyball, pick-up soccer, flag football, dog walking and people-watching happen.

Congress Bridge. The bats. Every night at dusk, people gather on the Congress Bridge in Downtown Austin to watch the daily ‘flight of the bats’ from underneath the bridge. Definitely a fun touristy thing to do.

Mount Bonnell. See the entire city from this beautiful bird’s eye view. Walk up the stairs to stand at the highest natural point in Austin.

South Congress. Walk up and down this little hot spot downtown, lined with a variety of Vintage and local stores, as well as eateries and restaurants (Hopdoddy=the best burgers in town, La Perla=incredible seafood, Home Slice=rivalry to New York style pizza if you are ‘cheating’, and Snack Bar=a perfect little dive with delicious American fare).

Alamo Drafthouse. A restaurant, bar and movie theater all in one. See local films, old classics, and the most recent flicks all in this theater—multiple locations throughout the city.

Shopping: The Domain. A ‘big store’ outdoor mall with a local Austin feel. Break out from the confines of the indoors and stroll along the sidewalks of this outdoor shopping venue, boasting stores such as Lululemon, Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, BCBG, and tons of great restaurants.

Dancing: Broken Spoke & White Horse. Texas country and line dancing come alive at these two dance halls. White Horse is more of a modern version though, playing all sorts of music genres any given night of the week (whereas Broken Spoke is most definitely the ‘old school’ country vibe.)

Bowling. The Goodnight & Punchbowl are two popular adult bowling venues with fun for your whole party—bowling, billiards, karaoke, ping-pong, other games and pretty good food.

Yoga. On top of the fitness and CrossFit scene, Austin is a yoga town! Check out Wanderlust, Practice Yoga or Breath & Body, to name a few, if you want to get your yoga on.

Jazz Music. Elephant Room hosts nightly jazz bands and solo artists in a low key environment.

Coffee Shops. There are too many local dives to count (no Starbucks included):

  • Halcyon-make your own s’mores at the table
  • Spiderhouse-funky Austin flare, with live music several nights per week
  • Dominican Joe’s-stop in for a caffeine pick-me-up while on South Congress
  • Cherrywood Coffeehouse– one of the best burgers in town and live music several nights per week as well
  • Summermoon—local, fair-trade coffee and blends
  • Mozart’s Coffee—overlooking the lake
  • Epoch Coffee—24/7 coffee

Bars. Once again, too many too count. A few notables without the crazy college vibe:

  • Handlebar
  • Crown & Anchor Pub
  • The Ginger Man
  • East Side Show Room
  • Moontower Saloon

Whole Foods Market. The world headquarters and basically many restaurants inside one. Sushi, BBQ, seafood, sandwiches, a taco bar, fresh juices and smoothies, an amazing hot bar and salad bar, Healthy Eating bowls and more…enough said.

Picknik. Paleo food truck on South Lamar. Their bone broth, BLT sandwiches and Bulletproof coffee are too die for.

Foodie Scene. There are far too many restaurants to write up a review on all of them—after all, Austin has become quite the ‘foodie town’, but here is a list of some of our faves for you to Yelp and Google search:

  • Uchi/Uchiko (Sushi)
  • 24 Diner
  • Moonshine
  • South Congress Cafe
  • Thai Fresh
  • Eastside Café
  • Jack Allen’s Kitchen
  • Koriente
  • Parkside
  • Justine’s
  • Odd Duck
  • Franklin Barbecue
  • The Clay Pit

Hopefully this helps at least get you started with the fun around the corner in Austin. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at if you have any questions
