24 Hour Murph

Coach Garrett is preparing to embark upon the fitness feat of his “lifetime” —performing the classic Murph WOD…for 24 hours straight on Memorial Day 2021.

Garrett's goal?

“I would like to complete 19 to 20 Rounds of Murph in the 24 hours,” he said.

Adding, “I think most of us go through our lives not understanding the sacrifice made by veterans and their families. Their battles continue long after they return home from duty. Memorial Day should be more than just an opportunity to go to a lake and party,” Garrett said.

Garrett’s mission is two-fold.

“First I want to help raise money for “Make a Vet Sweat” and help remember all those who have sacrificed for our nation,” he said. “Second, I want to encourage people to stay the course on their health and fitness journeys. It may seem cliche but no matter the challenge our minds and bodies are capable of overcoming.”

While most 20-year-olds Garrett’s age are busy playing Xbox, eating late night Taco Bell and lifting (the remote), Garret’s been busy training—physically and mentally— for the big game.

“I have been steadily increasing the volume since January. Currently, I am doing triple Murph between three and four days a week along with more conditioning workouts on ‘off’ days,” he said.

To date, his fastest time is around 33 to 34 minutes.

In order to accomplish 19 to 20 Murphs in 24 hours, Garrett’s plan is to divide the 19 to 20 rounds of Murph into sets of three for as long as possible.

Garrett’s 24-Hour Murph Strategies

  • Complete 3 Murphs at 50-minutes per Murph, then rest and repeat

  • Alternate running and walking every 400 meters during the 1 mile runs

  • Complete the pullups, pushups, and squats "Cindy Style”—20 rounds of 5 pull ups, 10 pushups, and 15 squats

And, let’s get real: The kitchen is where real champions are made. To give it his all, Garrett is strategically planning his “game day” nutrition.

“My triathlon background gives me an intimate knowledge into what to avoid for ‘race’ nutrition. We are still working out the details but I want to avoid high amounts of sugar for at least the first 12 hours. Peanut butter sandwiches and low sugar liquid carbs will be at the core,” Garret said.

We couldn’t be prouder to root our own champ on in his mission (and we’re very thankful that we all only have to do Murph one time too!).

"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm,” Garrett said, quoting Winston Churchill.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up? And as a kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
A.
While I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering I have little intention of becoming an Engineer. I know it may seem like a weird answer but I prefer to leave this one blank. I know what I want to be, but it's something very close to my heart.
