SOfIE CORTEZ

I joined CrossFit Central after moving to a new area and needing a gym with excellent programming and a supportive community that I could attend daily. From my first class, I felt welcomed and immediately loved the atmosphere and programming, so I joined right away. These aspects remain the reasons I love the gym. Before joining, I had just graduated college in May 2024 and moved back home to Austin to prepare for starting PA school in June 2025. I was hesitant to join a new gym after leaving the close-knit community I had in college. My main goals were to stay consistent with CrossFit, find a stress outlet, and become part of a community that would push me to improve daily. At the time, I was dealing with significant anxiety while applying to graduate school and looking for structure during an uncertain phase of my life.

Since joining CrossFit Central, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my strength. I had been stuck at the same PRs for years, but now I’m lifting heavier weights for reps, which is thrilling. My running has also improved dramatically—a previous weakness for me. Through Run Clubs with Coach Victoria and regular runs in workouts, I can now run 400s, 800s, and even a mile without walking, which is a huge win. Mentally, my stress levels have decreased significantly. Before knowing where I’d attend PA school, the uncertainty consumed my thoughts, but going to the gym became my daily mental relief and my favorite hour of the day. I’ve built meaningful friendships with coaches and fellow athletes, which extend beyond the gym. Additionally, with encouragement and guidance from coaches, I’ve improved my nutrition, learning that fueling and hydrating my body well leads to better performance.

Joining CrossFit Central has helped me grow in so many areas of life. I even joined a Bible study with other women from the gym, thanks to Rebecca Cybulski's invitation. The CrossFit community has become an integral and cherished part of my life.
